The Scallop Halter Top
I decided to start off this blog with a summer top, but it's still winter here in Australia so I won't be able to wear it for months.
I do this thing where I buy yarn because I think it looks cool but I haven't actually figured out what to make with it yet. This was one of those times, I bought this awesome gradient yarn, but only ended up using half of it, so I only used half of the colours … Oh well I guess I'll just have to make another top with the other half 😄
Materials:
Yarn: 4 ply cotton yarn, ~500m/546yards or 125g/4.4ounces; I used about half a skein of Hobbii twister in soft classics (55% Cotton, 45% acrylic)
Hook: 3mm
Needle
Abbreviations (US terms):
ch = chain
sc = single crochet
sc2tg = sc two together
dc = double crochet
dc2tog = dc two together
sk = skip
sl st = slip stitch
inc = two dc in one st
Notes:
- 2 dc means dc in the next two stitches
- Turning chain does not count as a stitch
- I have written the pattern in one size (approximately a size small or AU size 8), but it is super easy to customize! The top (including the edging) is 39cm/15.5inches long and has a circumference of 73cm/28.75inches.
- I will write lengths in inches and cm, which will be easy to adjust by altering the stitch or row count.
- Gauge: 11 dc x 7 rows is 5x5cm/2x2inches
The Pattern:
Ch 37 - this is approx. 14cm/5.5inches
Row 1: dc into 3rd chain from hook, dc into each
chain across. Turn.
Row 2-25: ch 2, inc into first
stich, dc into each stitch across until the last stitch, inc into last stitch,
turn. This is approx. 19cm/7.5inches long.
Now we are adding more width, to fit around our bodies; if you need to alter the stitch count make sure you have a multiple of 12 stitches, for when we do the scallops at the end.
Ch 36 and tie off yarn, attach yarn at the other end and ch 37, sl st into last ch of other chain– This gives me a circumference of 73cm/28.75inches
Row 26: ch 2, dc in
each chain across, sl st into first st. Turn.
Row 27-53: ch 2, dc into each stitch across, sl st into first st. Turn.
My total length is now 35.5cm/14inches
Now for the fun part! Time to start the scallops.
Row 54: ch 1, 5 sc, *sk 1, 5 dc into next st, sk 1, 10 sc*,
repeat between * 11 more times, sk 1, 5 dc into next st, sk 1, 4 sc, sl st into
first st.
Row 55: ch 1, 3 sc, *sk 2, inc into each dc from previous
row, sk 2, 6 sc *, repeat between *11 more times, sk 2, inc into each dc from
previous row, sk 2, 2 sc, sl st into first st.
Row 56: ch 1, sc, *sk 2, into dc from previous row; dc, inc,
dc, inc, dc, inc, dc, inc, dc, inc; sk 2, sc* repeat between * 12 more times,
sl st into first st. Tie off.
Time to do the edging and the straps, because I did the straps at the same time as the edging it's hard to explain with words, so here is a diagram.

| For row one, attach the yarn at the position of the BLUE arrow, and then follow the yellow arrows around. |
Row 1: attach the yarn 16 stitches away from the side (at blue arrow), ch 1, sc in each st right ways and evenly up the side (see diagram) you want to
have a multiple of 8 stitches. At the corner of the side and top, ch 92, sl
st 16 st away from the left side, sc in each st left ways and evenly up the
side (see diagram) you want to have a multiple of 8 stitches. At the
corner of the side and top, ch 92, sl st next to first st, sc in each stitch
left ways until you reach the edging on the other side, sc into same st as sl
st you want to have a multiple of 8 + 1. Turn.
Row 2: ch 1, 3 sc, *sk 1, 5dc into the same st, sk 1, 5 sc*
repeat between * until end you reach the chain, sc into each ch. When you reach the bottom; 3
sc, *sk 1, 5 dc into the same st, sk 1, 5 sc* repeat between * until end you
reach the chain, sc into each ch. When you reach the bottom; 3 sc, *sk 1, 5dc into the same st,
sk 1, 5 sc* repeat between * until end of the row. Turn.
Row 3: ch 1, sc, *sk 2, inc into each dc from previous row, sk 2, sc* repeat between * until end you reach the chain, sc into each ch. When you reach the bottom; sc, *sk 2, inc into each dc from previous row, sk 2, sc* repeat between * until end you reach the chain, sc into each ch. When you reach the bottom; sc, *sk 2, inc into each dc from previous row, sk 2, sc* repeat between * until end of the row. Tie off.
Finally, to finish of the top edge:
Row 1: Attach the yarn at the corner, ch 1, sc in each st
across. Turn. (35 st)
Row 2: ch 1, sc2tg, 2 sc, *sk 1, 5 dc into next stitch, sk
1, 3 sc* repeat 2 more times, sk 1, 5 dc into next stitch, sk 1, 2 sc, sc2tg.
Turn.
Row 3: ch 1, sc *sk 2, inc into each dc from previous row,
sk 2, sc* repeat until the end of the row. Tie off.
There may be some gaps between sections of the edging, you can used the tails to sew these up!
