The Diamond Top

Diamonds may not be my best friend (sorry Marilyn Monroe), but they do make for a fun pattern. This top is sure to be a staple in my summer wardrobe this year.

Materials:

Yarn: 4 ply cotton yarn, ~500m/546 yards or 125g/4.4 ounces; I used half a skein of Hobbii Twister, in the colour Soft Classics

Hook: 3mm

Needle

Abbreviations (US Terms):

ch = chain

sc = single crochet

dc = double crochet

sl st = slip stitch

sk = skip

ch sp = chain space

dec = decrease; dc tow together

Notes:

- Turning ch does not count as a stitch

- ch 1 space counts as a st

- The pattern is written to fit an AU size 8, or size small; as always tips for altering the size are written in italics

- Gauge: 11 dc x 7 rows = 5x5 cm or 2x2 inches

The Pattern:

The pattern is worked in rounds from the bottom up.

ch 173 ; this length is the circumference of the top, so should fit around your body.

Round 1: dc in 3rd ch from hook, dc in each ch across, sl st into first st, turn. (171 st)

Round 2-19: ch 2, dc across, sl st into first st, turn. 

My top ends up ~ 32 cm or 12.6 inches long; change the number of plain rows to alter the length.

Round 20: ch 2, 85 dc, ch 1, sk 1, 85 dc, sl st into first st, turn

Round 21: ch 2, 84 dc, ch 1 sk 1, dc (into ch sp), ch 1 sk 1, 84 dc, sl st into first st, turn

Round 22: ch 2, 83 dc, ch 1 sk 1, 3 dc, ch 1 sk 1, 83 dc, sl st into first st, turn

Round 23: ch 2, 82 dc, ch 1 sk 1, 5 dc, ch 1 sk 1, dc, 82 dc, sl st into first st, turn

Round 24: ch 2, 81 dc, ch 1 sk 1, dc, ch 1 sk 1, 3 dc, ch 1 sk 1, dc, ch 1 sk 1, 81 dc, sl st into first st, turn

Round 25: ch 2, 80 dc, *ch 1 sk 1, 3 dc, ch 1 sk 1, dc* twice, 79 dc, sl st into first st, turn

Round 26: ch 2, 79 dc, *ch 1 sk 1, 5 dc* twice, ch 1 sk 1, 79 dc, sl st into first st, turn

Round 27: ch 2, 78 dc, *ch 1 sk 1, dc, ch 1 sk 1, 3 dc* twice, ch 1 sk 1, dc, ch 1 sk 1, 78 dc, sl st into first st, turn.

Round 28: ch 2, 77 dc, *ch 1 sk 1, 3 dc, ch 1 sk 1, dc* three times, 76 dc, sl st into first st, turn.

Round 29: ch 2, 76 dc, *ch 1 sk 1, 5dc* three times, ch 1 sk 1, 76 dc, sl st into first st, turn.

Round 30: ch 2, 75 dc, *ch 1 sk 1, dc, ch 1 sk 1, 3 dc* three times, ch 1 sk 1, dc, ch 1 sk 1, 75 dc, sl st into first st, turn.

Round 31: ch 2, 74 dc, *ch 1 sk 1, 3 dc, ch 1 sk 1, dc* four times, 73 dc, sl st into first st, turn.

Round 32: ch 2, 73 dc, *ch 1 sk 1, 5dc* four times, ch 1 sk 1, 73 dc, sl st into first st, turn.

Round 33: ch 2, 72 dc, *ch 1 sk 1, dc, ch 1 sk 1, 3 dc* four times, ch 1 sk 1, dc, ch 1 sk 1, 72 dc, sl st into first st, turn.

Round 34: ch 2, 71 dc, *ch 1 sk 1, 3 dc, ch 1 sk 1, dc* five times, 70 dc, sl st into first st, turn.

Round 35: ch 2, 70 dc, *ch 1 sk 1, 5dc* five times, ch 1 sk 1, 70 dc, sl st into first st, turn.

Round 36: ch 2, 69 dc, *ch 1 sk 1, dc, ch 1 sk 1, 3 dc* five times, ch 1 sk 1, dc, ch 1 sk 1, 69 dc, sl st into first st, turn.

Round 37: ch 2, 68 dc, *ch 1 sk 1, 3 dc, ch 1 sk 1, dc* six times, 67 dc, sl st into first st, turn.

Round 38: ch 2, 67 dc, *ch 1 sk 1, 5dc* six times, ch 1 sk 1, 67 dc, sl st into first st, turn.

Round 39: ch 2, 66 dc, *ch 1 sk 1, dc, ch 1 sk 1, 3 dc* six times, ch 1 sk 1, dc, ch 1 sk 1, 66 dc, sl st into first st, turn.

Round 40: ch 2, 65 dc, *ch 1 sk 1, 3 dc, ch 1 sk 1, dc* seven times, 64 dc, sl st into first st, turn.

Round 41: ch 2, 64 dc, *ch 1 sk 1, 5dc* seven times, ch 1 sk 1, 64 dc, sl st into first st, tie off.

Attach yarn 7 dc away from the last ch sp (the most recently crocheted) and work towards the diamond pattern.

Round 42: ch 2, dec, 4 dc, *ch 1, sk 1, dc, ch 1 sk 1, 3 dc* eight times, 1 dc, dec, turn.

Round 43: ch 2, dec, 2 dc, *ch 1, sk 1, 3 dc, ch 1, sk 1, dc* eight times, 1 dc, dec, turn,

Round 44: ch 2, dec, *ch 1, sk 1, 5 dc* eight times, ch 1, sk 1, dec, turn.

Round 45: ch 2, dec, *ch 1, sk 1, 3 dc, ch 1, sk 1, dc* seven times, ch 1, sk 1, 3 dc, ch 1, sk 1, dec, turn.

Round 46: ch 2, dec, *ch 1, sk 1, dc, ch 1 sk 1, 3 dc* seven times, ch 1, sk 1, dc, ch 1 sk 1, dec, turn.

Round 47: ch 2, dec, *ch 1, sk 1, 5 dc* seven times, ch 1, sk 1, dec, turn.

Round 48: ch 1, sc across the row, continue down the side of the rows, and around the top edge and up the other side, sl st into first st. Tie off

For the straps;

ch 76 or an appropriate length to fit you :)

Row 1: sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in each ch across. Turn.

Row 2-3: ch 1, sc across. Turn.

Tie off, and sew onto the top.

Crochet Yarn Basket, with a pocket!

I have been storing all my yarn on a spare shelf in my room, but it tends to spread out . . .  a lot. I needed are more compact way to store it, so I thought a basket would be a great idea! I could have bought one and fixed my problem right away, but why do that when I could buy MORE yarn to clutter my shelf and crochet myself a basket? The Scallop Halter Top

I decided to start off this blog with a summer top, but it's still winter here in Australia so I won't be able to wear it for months. I do this thing where I buy yarn because I think it looks cool but I haven't actually figured out what to make with it yet.
